Vyshnavi Ciluveru - Applied Biomedical Engineering
Can you share a little bit about the project you worked on and presented?
My research examines how sanitizers and water conditions affect Salmonella survival and cross-contamination during poultry processing. I study commonly used disinfectants like peracetic acid and chlorine and evaluate how factors such as organic matter, pH, temperature, and contact time influence their effectiveness during scalding, chilling, and post-chill processing.
What do you hope people will take away from the research you have presented?
I hope my work shows that food safety depends on more than just using sanitizers—it also depends on understanding how quickly they degrade and how easily bacteria can spread during processing. These insights can help improve sanitation practices and reduce foodborne illness risk.
Why did you choose your specific CSU degree for your graduate degree?
I chose the Chemical and Biomedical Engineering program at CSU because it combines engineering fundamentals with real-world applications. The program’s focus on applied research and strong faculty mentorship made it a great fit for my academic and career goals.
What is a highlight of your grad school experience?
A major highlight has been presenting my research at conferences and reaching my candidacy milestone. Collaborating with my advisor, committee, and lab members has been especially rewarding.
How do you hope your degree and research you’ve conducted will impact your career?
My graduate training has prepared me for a career in food safety research, industry, or regulatory science. I hope to apply my skills to develop science-based solutions that improve public health and food safety systems.
What advice would you give students interested in pursuing the grad program you were in?
Get involved in research early, ask questions, and take advantage of faculty mentorship. Staying organized and building a strong support network makes a big difference in graduate school.
